The best way to prevent an emergency is to have a fire escape plan. Older children must be trained and familiarised with this plan by practicing fire drill regularly. All the records for each fire drill must be written in risk assessment folder. In home- based settings smoke detector should be fitted. It must be checked regularly, and details recorded. In event of fire the priority is to evacuate children. If fire is preventing escape from the building, fire blanket must be used. Fire escape plan: Babies and younger children must be carried out of building. All the children must be taken to a safe place and counted. Call fire brigade. Contact parents/carers to arrange collection of the children and take them into a warm place if possible until collected. Phone Ofsted. Do not return to building until it’s safe to do so. Carer must always carry mobile phone fully charged with all emergency contact numbers on it.
The most important thing when dealing with an accident is to remain calm so the carer can deal with the situation more effectively. First the injured child needs to be calmed to make sure that they are responding, and check where injuries are. Then check their breathing, pulse and put child in a recovery position. If required call ambulance. In an event of accident every child carer must have parent/carers emergency phone number so they can be contacted. All accidents, after they are dealt with, must be recorded in a book. If any medical treatment was required when dealing with injury child carers must inform Ofsted (Standard 14.3 Children Act regulation) and serious accidents/incidents must be reported to RIDDOR. Insurance Company should be informed.

In every emergency plan you should have the following:
Post emergency numbers in a central place where they won't be missed
Escape routes
Important documents
A "go-bag."
