Smile Grow wheat for playdough!

Cutting wheat in July when the ears are green provides a great contrast to their golden ripe versions ready in August and September.

If you're urban or unable to ask a local farm for a handful of stalks for craft purposes then a lovely way to enjoy this plant is to dedicate a 50cm barrel planter or tub and grow your own mini cereal crop! Start it off in spring or autumn using seeds and the instructions provided on the packet. Alternatively, bird seed can be an excellent way to source what you need! Make sure it hasn't been treated and branded as 'no grow'.

Once sown, grown and green or gold,
harvest your crop and enjoy markmaking, weaving, collage, playdough and paint activities.
