What is holistic development
The key to understanding child development is 'wholeness'. Studying holistic child development is a way of seeing children in the round, as whole people. It is important to keep in mind that even a tiny baby is a person. People grow and develop physically, but they are whole human bings from the very start. If different aspects of a child's development are seen as separated strands, each isolated from the other, the child comes to be seen as a collection of bits and pieces instead of a whole person. On the other hand, it is useful to look closely at a particular area of a chil's development, whether to check that all is well, to celebrate progress, to see how to help the child with the next step of development and learning, or to give special help where needed. Even when focusing on one aspect of development it is important, however, not to forget that we are looking at a whole person. A person has a physical body, thoughts and ideas, emotions and relationships - all developing and functioning at the same time. When we think of the complete child in this way, we are taking a holistic approach.
