National Pets Month 2008

National Pet Month begins on the 5th April 2008

The official website can be found here www.nationalpetmonth.org.uk

We wanted to help highlight the importance of sensible pet ownership and have pulled together this set of resources and ideas to help show the children how they too can play an important part in the welfare of the pets/animals they come in contact with.

Colouring pictures

Spindle Spider has a few categories of colouring pictures that can help you show the children different types and species of animals.

Domestic Animals
Wild Animals
Farm Animals

Activity/Discussion Ideas
Ask if the children can bring in photographs of their own or a friends pet.
See if they know how to look after an animal ...eg.
* Feed it
* Has water to drink
* Make sure it is clean/has a clean & warm place to sleep
* Exercise it
* Brush / groom it's fur.
* poop a scooping !! Making sure dogs are cleaned up after!

Do the children know what types of animals make good pets? & which don't (tigers & Lions lol)
What do the children like most about their pet ?
How we care for animals in general - Children that live on farms will care for baby lambs and calves but they still aren't 'pets'.
See if you can get a Vet or animal shelter worker to pay a visit and talk to the children.

Display work in a giant paper paw print.
Collage Domestic animal outlines.
Look at Pet animal colours and the sort of fur, scales, skin that they have.
