Hi, by working in partnership with Rianne's parents you would know how staying in hospital affects her. Together you would be able to plan activities that look at staying in hospital enabling her to share her experiences with everyone in the group so that she feels positive and in control of her visits.

You would be aware of her behaviour and sensitive to any changes that mean she is worried about the hospital stay.

The setting might also have resources or activity ideas that support Rianne's development that her parents/carer can take with them into hospital so that she has a distraction and her parents can join in.

Page 80+ of this level 3 EYE handbook looks further at how practitioners support children preparing for a planned hospital stay

Quote:
Going into hospital can be a frightening for children so most hospitals work with parents to prepare children for this. Many hospitals use booklets and also film clips to help children understand what will happen when they are in hospital. Some hospitals will also let children look around berforehand. When it comes to the role of the practitioner, their main duty is to work closely with the parents, and where appropriate, the hospital to decide how best to prepare the child. This is important because, if all adults do not work together closely children may get mixed messages about what will happen when they are in hospital and this can make the child more anxious.

Best wishes
