Hi, welcome to the forum.

Search inside this Early Years Educator book for the words 'English as an additional language' and click to page 419.

It'll help you understand what the cultural and language needs of children with EAL are eg. early indientification, to communicate in ways the child understands, provide actitivites that supports their development of the English language, ensure time and opportunity to communicate is given, work in partnership with parents, promote the benefits of bilingualism.

The following is a quote from page 133 of this level 3 EYE handbook

Promote a sense of belonging
Standard English is the ususal way of communicating in public, educational, professional and commercial aspects of life. However, young children need to be confident in talking, reading, and writing in their home language and to be supported in their early years setting. This actually helps children hto develop fluency and literacy in English. So it is important that the child's own language is valued and that efforts are made to develop balanced bilingualism.

Use the look inside feature and search for 'encouraging children to use what they know' and click to page 135

English as an Additional Language in the Early Years
