Staff on jury Service

Hi, we have a member of staff being called away on Jury Service in July! We are SUPER short of staff as it is... all supply staff on our books covering hols etc!!! Oh, we'll find someone, I'm sure!(?!?!)

Anyway, what's everyone's policy for paying staff while they are on Jury service? I think they can claim loss of earnings while they are on it, is that right? In which case we don't need to pay them surely, as we will be paying for whoever is covering? Is that what you would do?

we couldn't afford to pay them and staff cover!!

is she is able to claim for loss of earnings no you would not pay a wage too.

My experience of jury service last year was that the juror gets an expenses form. They get travel, food and so much to cover loss of earnings (I'm sorry I can't tell you how much - I'd just left work to raise my kids). As far as I'm aware the juror is not paid from work; some companies make up the money, but many don't.

when i was on jury service a few years ago now.... i was paid full loss of earnings from the court... my boss didnt pay me anything!

Id say its fair not to pay wages as long as the staff member doesnt incur a loss of earnings because of jury service... but they should be covered by the court!! and.... furthermore..... i think you can possibly ask for them not to attend if you have noone to cover them (if your staffing situation is really that bad) but they will have to go and do it in a few months time!! I remember that when i did it i had a course already booked so i was allowed to attend the course that day instead of the court!

Have a look at http://www.cjsonline.gov.uk/juror/expenses/index.html

Explains what expenses are claimable. There is a loss of earnings clause and looks as if the employer needs to complete some forms for this. The juror needs to submit these forms on the first day they attend, so they might need to get a copy of they haven't already been sent one.

I did JS about 12 years ago, but worked for a major company and they paid me for my time.
