Thank you Activities and crafts - learning area information

Extend the title of Mother's day for your children to say thanks to a special carer that they have in their life ... speak to carer/guardian/parents to check details and permissions of using names during any planning stage.

Mathmatical Development
Sequencing and ordering numbering

Have a bunch of premade (or artificial) flowers.
Label them with numbers
Have small cups /vases numbered for the children to match vase to flower.
OR
Have vases numbered 1 - 5 and 15 flowers so that the right amount can be put into each vase!

Physical Development
Actions and music!

In the gym, playground or open space of the playroom, have some music playing in the background whilst you and the children do the moves and actions of household jobs.

1. Make the bed
2. Sweep the floor
3. Dust the shelves
4. Hoover the stairs
5. Walk the dog
6. Run the bath
7. Weed the garden
8. Lock the doors
9. Turn out the lights
10. Iron the clothes

Communication Language Literacy

Mother's and Carers day - appreciation sack!!
Play this activity during circle time or as a freely accessible resource.

In a pillow case or bag have a selection of items:
a Saucepan
a play Iron
Small washing powder box (empty!)
Washing up liquid bottle/dishwasher tablet !
Packed lunch/snack box
A hairbrush
A dustpan & brush
Clothes peg
Tea towel

Ask the children in turn to take an item from the bag and show it to the rest of group - companions.
Ask if they know the object.
If it's been seen before
Where it's been seen
What job it does.
How the child would use the item
Who would use it
Is the item good or bad

Creative Development

Crafts

1. Woolly Love bug card from Mischief mouse!

2. For older children soap etching can be an engaging activity.
Purchase plain bars of soap and with sculpting tools (or empty biro pen cases!) let the children score their own designs and shapes onto the surface of the soap.
Use Fiesty's BOX template and allow the children to colour in and design the cover... assemble and store the soap inside.
Finish off by wrapping a piece of ribbon around the box and tying a bow.

3. Handprint picture and rhymes - SEE HERE for rhyme examples.

4. Bunch of flowers! - we have some flower ideas HERE

5. Clay pots, coasters and cards!! Photos & instructions from The Rainbow Sunbeams website!

RolePlay

1. Home corner
Have the home corner set to 'home' so that they children can experience a normal days worth of household jobs.
ironing board, washing machine, clothes line + pegs, Dustpan & brushes, Dusters and 'pretend' polish! Oven & cooking equipment. Baby dolls and beds to change the sheets.

Knowledge & understanding of the World

The History of Mother's day - Understanding why mothers day evolved.

Celebrations date back to ancient Greece where a day was dedicated to worshipping Rhea - the Mother of the gods.
Then in the 17th century christians began a day of thanks on the 4th Sunday of Lent.

Personal Social Emotional

By looking at the actions and jobs that mums and other carers do to take care and look after us we can learn to appreciate and respect the decisions they make and reasons for the decisions they make.

 If as a group you wanted to show your appreciation of your mums/guardians on this day ..how about sending home your own

For parents wanting activity ideas for the day make up some Mother/Carer day packs to send home:
Suggested ideas to include ...
1. A colouring pictures, outlines or plain paper + small packet of crayons
2. Recipe for playdough.
3. Leaflet/s from the local takeaways. Recipe and special meal ideas.
4. A couple of tea bags on a Tea pot shaped piece of paper!
5. A list of activities they can take part in with their child or provide as freeplay..
eg:
:valentine Play bubbles at bathtime with two cups and blowing hoops - bubble resource page
:valentine Pot of bubbly water and straws to blow huge bubble mountains!
:valentine Find 5 pebbles in the garden, use a marker and give the pebble a face ..
:valentine See what spring flowers are out - Snow drops, daffodils, crocus
:valentine Balloons!

To all the Mums, Mam's, Mom,s and carers out there...

Have a wonderful Mothering Sunday!
