Social Networking- There is many different social networks such as Facebook, Bebo, My Space and Twitter. These social networking sites have rules to using them and sometimes many children or young people do not realise that what they are posting whether it be a video, written post or a picture it can be used against them, if another child or young person takes offence to it.
Many sites have an age limit and require an e-mail address when you sign up. Some parents will set their child up with a Facebook, Bebo, My Space or Twitter page and will set all the privacy settings for them.
It is important that when signing up to a network site that you set all of your privacy settings, so that you can decide what you want others to see, and only add children or young people that you know and report others that you don’t, many of the social networking sites have a setting where you can report or block a user and then a small box pops up on your page saying:-Report and/or block this person
Select an option below if you would like to unfriend or block this person:
Unfriend Russ
Russ will not be able to post on your Wall
Block Russ
Blocking means you won't be able to see or contact each other on Facebook
Additionally, you may report this Profile as the following:
My friend is annoying me
This profile is pretending to be someone or is fake
Choose a type Pretending to be me Pretending to be someone I know Pretending to be a celebrity Represents a business or an organisation Does not represent a real person
Inappropriate Profile photo
Inappropriate wall post
My friend is harassing or bullying me
By using a networking site you could be setting yourself up for online bullying, sexual harassment, grooming, emotional abuse, harassment and physical abuse. It’s a good idea if you are a child or young person not to use a picture of yourself and not to tell people your real name, use a nickname and a picture of a cartoon, Disney picture or a simple landscape picture.
If you suspected that a friend or sibling is being bulled, sexually harassed, harassed, being emotionally abused, physically abused or even being groomed by a paedophile them you need to tell your parents, an adult you trust or even the police and then tell the networking site. Ways of telling them is by going on to their profile and using the Report and/or block this person system and underneath the box you tick you can place a comment where you can tell them your concerns. In many cases when the social network is notified first the user will have their site deleted and their e-mail put on a list so they cannot reuse it on that site.
Internet Use: - The internet is a fascinating place for a child or young person they can find anything they want on there. Parents/Careers can set up parental controls on their child’s or young persons computers which restricts what they are looking at and what they are looking for. Parental controls even allow the parent or carer to limit the time they spend on the computer and they can see from their own computer what the child or young person is looking at.
In the UK, the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) was launched in September 2008, and is designed to keep children and young people safe while they are surfing the internet. Over 170 organisations and individuals from government, industry, law enforcement, academia and recognised charities work in partnership with each other to keep children and young people safe online, for example, by raising public awareness of how to enjoy the internet safely.
In February 2010 the Council launched a new behavioural code called 'Click Clever Click Safe' in which the key messages 'zip it, block it, flag it' encourage children to keep personal information safe, to avoid opening links and emails from unknown senders and to tell someone they trust if they encounter anything online that upsets them.
Buying online:-When buying online you never know what you are really buying and if the site is trust worthy. It is always a good idea to look at different sites and have a firewall on your computer that tells you if the site you are going on is recommended and it will have a green circle and a tick inside. By using the recommended sites you are less likely to have your identity stolen and more likely to get the product that you actually wanted.
Using A Mobile Phone:- mobile phones are a great way of keeping track of a child or young person if they have one, as many phones have a GPS tracking device built in the phone. Many mobile phone providers have produced an application for parents/ carers phones where they can track their child or young person at different times of the day and where they can monitor their calls and texts. To help keep a child or young person safe when using a mobile phone is by teaching them how to use it and even have a password on their phones to keep the information safe and teach them not to give out their number to people that they do not know. Even teaching them how to call for help or having a code for calling for help if they cannot dial 999.
