Upon stopping off at motorway services, I spotted the following Kennel Club guidelines for road travel with your dog,
so I thought they could be of some use to some of you.
Gradually accustom your dog to car travel by taking him/her on short journeys at first.
Always ensure that your dog has plenty of ventilation and shade in the car and that fresh water is available.
Never leave your dog unattended in a car for long periods, especially in hot weather.
Ensure your dog is kept on a lead in all public places.
Attach an I.D. tag to your dog's collar and ensure your dog is wearing it at all times, it should contain your name and address. This is a legal requirement. It is highly recommended that you have your dog microchipped and registered on the Petlog Reunification as this can provide great benefit in locating a lost pet.
Train your dog not to bark or move around excessively whilst the vehicle is in motion as it can be very distracting to the driver.
Ensure you dog is transported safely - utilise a special dog guard, cage or harness.
Ensure your dog is in the best possible health before travelling. Pet insurance can provide your dog with the best possible treatment if an accident or illness occurs.
Train your dog to be sociable and obedient. The Kennel Club run a Good Citizen Dog Scheme, which is a fun and enjoyable way of training your dog and provides essential advice on responsible dog ownership.
