Different rooms per age groups

Can anyone tell me if settings that have babies and children from the age of birth to 5 need to have different rooms for different age groups? or does it just depend on the setting? I am busy doing a essay on environments for learning and development and cannot seem to find the answer to this. thanks in advance x

I am guessing that it is up to the childcare setting but what would happen if im wrong as I cannot seem to get a definite answer?

no they don't in fact it is a shortsighted method of setting up a nursery. if you take vygotskys ZPD and scaffolding theories then it recedes a childs likelihood to develop and therefore learn. BUT many nurseries do it as its easier to mange and the staff don't have to be so skill full.
