Benefits for children include:

• The early years are a period of formative learning and development and can have significant influence o the rest of a child's life.
• Early years services offer the care and education children need to give them the best start in life.
• Children may receive a better start in life so that they are ready to succeed, live longer and lead healthier lives.
• Early years settings enrich the lives of children to become confident and successful individuals learning through play.

Benefits for parents include

• Parents and carers and the wider family have the greatest influence on children, particularly in the early years.
• Early years settings develop partnerships with parents/carers in whys which help them to provide nurturing and stimulating family environments that give children the best start in life.
• Early years settings support parents ans carers to improve parenting skills that secure better outcomes for their families.

Benefits for the early years setting include

• Collaborative working and partnership in the early years setting helps to deliver the relevant early years framework (ie. if yo work in england the framework will be the EYFS)
• Encouragement of integration and sharing of services and a more cost effective use of scarce resources between local and national childcare agencies.
• Support the development of appropriate approaches which enable children and their parents/cares to be active participants in the services they use

• Early years settings support on/for service developments that engage and empower families as well as strengthen communities.
• Enables parents to choose early years and childcare services with the child's welfare driving the decision rather than economics.
• Collaboration and support across the early years sector and increased emphasis on the value of voluntary sector community based services which offer flexibly, engaging, innovative and holistic approaches.
• Providing early interventions and services that help children experience the best start to life that prevents, later, often more costly interventions.

The role of the parent committee is explored on page 414 where actual practices for your setting can be used eg. how the setting is responsible for running itself preschool/playgroup or parent and toddler group. Organising fundraising, negotiating the lease terms with a landlord. How the setting is the employer of staff, responsibility for recruitment, wages, salariesm tax and national insurance, pensions, appraisals, contracts of employment, terms and conditions. Developing a business plan, budgeting, funding, insurance, membership fees, accomodation costs, volunteer exprenses, admission costs and publicity costs, The committee along with staff also have the responsibility for health and safety, risk assessment, insurance and first aid, as well as policy making. Making sure the Early Years framework is implemented and requirements for ratios, space, session times are met. Supervisors are responsible for preparing long, medium and short term plans as appropriate to your setting, ensuring appropriate activities for learning and development, supervision of staff on a day to day basis and reporting to the management committee on a regular basis.



And on page 416 resources that your setting might use to help parents develop knowledge and skills include:

• Places where they can access support networks and advice
• Identify personal and study goals eg. how to complete a written task or practical task
• Develop their own ideas on how to present these
• Work out how to do management committee or support group tasks eg. participating in meetings, understanding budgets, fundraising
• Develop time management eg. prioritise tasks, plan study time and social life
• Develop study skills including where to find information eg. developing word-processing skills, using the internet
