From the other side, I advertise and interview applicants for jobs and it's equally hard for me when I have numerous applicants and only one position.
If there are lots of applicants it's hard to get it down to just a few to interview especially when qualifications are the same or similar. It may appear 'nosey' or pointless but when you put down your hobbies or interests, it just may be what will make the difference - it's always good to have different skills in a nursery or pre-school setting.
You may have done nothing wrong, but were just plain unlucky. Someone has to be chosen and if you've given a good account of yourself at the interview, the person chosen is not home and dry until their probation period has passed.
Don't get disheartened, remain positive and upbeat and hopefully you will be in a job soon.
