Hi, page 105+ of this level 3 STL handbook looks at supporting children's behaviour.

Quote from page 107

Explain referral processes in line with policies and procedures for behaviour that challenges

The sorts of behaviours or discipline problems that should be referred to others are those that:
  • present a danger to themselves, you or others
  • are regularly disruptive to other student's learning
  • do not respond to the school or colleges behaviour management strategies
  • are a cause for concern
These kind of behaviour problems will need to have additional support and strategies from those given to others. If the issues are ongoing and you have tried a number of different strategies, yout first sources of advice will by your school or college's SENCo. They may come and observe the child or young person in class, or give you additional strategies to help manage their behavuiour. They will also be able to refer you to other professionals external to the school or college if additional strategies have been tried.

At the first signs that there may be a problem, it may be helpful for you and other staff to keep an incident log so that you have dates and can remember exactly what has happened and how it was dealt with. It may also be helpful to note if there are any triggers or situations that spark this behaviour. This is because your SENCo, and later others, are likely to ask you for as much information as you can provide. It is also helpful to have specific evidence over time as it may bne needed at a later date.

Outside the school or college, your SENCo may refer the child or young person for support from and educational psychologist or CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) so that they can have a specialist assessment. Parental approval will be need to be given for this to take place, and staff and parents will then be given ongoing advice and support so that strategies and help can be provided.

If possible use or aask for a copy of your school's behavioural policy so see how it reflects this.

Best wishes
