Multicultural Storysacks

Found a nice set of statements on Leicester.gov's website surrounding the benefits of using multicultural storysacks ..

Quote:
The importance of multicultural and bilingual storysacks
  • Multicultural storysacks promote positive awareness of cultural differences
  • They develop knowledge of cultural differences and similarities thereby promoting good relationships between cultures
  • They show that, as schools, we value the differing cultures and ethnicities within our city
  • They promote positive images of ethnic minorities
  • They show respect for, and appreciation of, other customs and religions
  • They help to raise ethnic identity and self-esteem
  • They encourage parental involvement in their children's learning
  • They help to develop good relationships between school and home
  • The use of bilingual materials enables families to work together
  • EAL children are able to access and understand new vocabulary in a secure environment
  • Children are able to see their home language in print
  • Parents maintain the use of their mother tongue
  • Storysacks raise awareness of how family involvement can benefit the learning of the child

Whilst the official report is dated 2003/4 the web page itself was modified on 13/3/2007 by Multi Cultural Education

We always found it quite hard to get hold of nice fictional storybook titles, not sure if the range has improved lately !!?
