J Stephen Fountain, Phd - Developmental Characteristics of the 6-8 year old.
Social and emotional
Attachment to friends grows during this stage. They like to continue to play with friends and dont like to be interupted. Try and give them 5 min warning before you have to leave or tidy up.
Most have 'best friend' and 'enemy'. Much of their activities centre round those they want to play with and those who are not welcome.
Friends are likely to be the same ***.
Children in this age group often become attached to another adult ie teacher, club leader, neighbourhood teenager etc.
durings these years they have a strong desire for the affection and attention of parents. There is much reporting of activities to families.
Children in this age range release tension through physical activity, ie they may be extremely active when tired. Try to encourage quiet play before bedtime.
More realistic fears other than those of ghosts, witches, creatures in dark places. these new fears revolve around school, social relationships and disaster.
Children in this age group are sensitive to personal criticism and do not know how to accept failure.
Hope this helps a little. X
