Eymp 2 4.2, 5.1 Support sustained shared thinking and supporting learning development of children in early years
Sustained shared thinking has been defined as “ an episode in which two or more individuals ` work together` in an intellectual way to solve a problem, clarify a concept, evaluate activities, extend a narrative etc. Both parties must contribute to the thinking and must develop and extend” ref. Siraji-Blatchford et al (2002) Researching Effective Pedagogy in the Early Years (REPEY), Dfes. Found on web page www. kathybrodie.com. 04/11/2011
In an activity held in the nursery involving 3 children, age 4, collecting leaves and making prints with paints for a display on the nursery wall. Understanding the children requirement for information, knowledge and exchange of ideas the activity was adapted to making prints with water (the leaves where wet from outside). One of the children commented about the pattern the leaf made when drying it with a paper towel and promptly went to make the leaf wet again. The other children become involved in this and even tried the other different leaves. One leaf was dirty and the child discovered this made a different print than the others. As the water dried on the paper towels the pattern disappeared, this then lead the children to paint the leaves and make prints on paper. Conversations evolved between the children and myself. Colours, size, shape, feel, rough, smooth, wet, cold, describing how the leaves changed, how the water/paints made the prints. The children showed great interest and although the activity was planned for 10 mins it however lasted for an hour.
Engaging with the children in an activity like above gave me an insight how children interact with others, communicate, their abilities, and understanding of the world around them. The activity plan developed and changed as the children involved themselves, their ideas and thoughts enable us all to discover a new way of printing. Pressing the leaves between paper towels gave a mystery to what was underneath. The children led the activity supported by my knowledge of how to interact and guild them, allowing freedom, excitement, and discovering the activity together.
This activity can be used for many ages adapting for abilities and learning levels. Older children learning the names of the plants, the science of growth, numeracy of age, height, History, geographical of the plant. Documentation of the plant what animals use, live and even destroy it.
Understanding how growth of a plant reflects, influences a child’s life. Seasons of change, joys of events, emotions to loss, change and a understanding of the environment around us. A plant like many things in life shows a child/ young person the life cycle, evoking emotions, discussions, which when planning any activity must be taken into consideration.
Hope it helps
