Default Pre-school writing skills!

I work in a pre-school setting and recently a couple of parents are requesting that they want their child to be able to write their name by the time they leave, we explain to the parents that the children learn through play and that we offer them activities like mark making tools and opportunities to use various mark making tools using both fine motor and gross motor movements which give them future skills for writing but we don't sit them down and teach them how to write their names, or should we be!!! what do other people's settings do!
