General question play coins ?

Can I ask what age you introduce play money safely ? I cannot find any suitable for children under 3s on the Internet, which leads be to believe that is the age (3) but my playgroup had some out today when they were playing shop. The children there are from aged 2, most of the coins were really small ie size of a one pence piece.
