The therapeutic role of play in helping children recover



Jade is four years old. She is in hospital because she has had pneumonia. In the last couple of days, she has been well enough to go to the playroom. The paediatric play therapist has watched as Jade has dressed up as a nurse and cared for a doll. She knows that Jade became distressed last week when she was given a bed bath. She asks Jade if it is time for the dolly to have a bed bath and when Jade says yes, she brings some wipes and a cardboard bowl. Jade talks to the dolly and tells it not to cry because she will be gentle. She also tells the dolly that she will only be able to go home when she is not being silly. The paediatric play therapist notes this down and later on talks to the nurse
