I have not done this unit, but for shared understanding is it not the partnership you have with the parents/carers of the children in your care?
For example, with any child you are caring for within a setting it is important to understand the child and their needs, often as many of the children are so young this information is passed on by the parents. Your shared understanding between the two parties can be the professional (you) taking into account the parents views and opinions on how the child is looked after - types of food provided, times they eat/sleep etc. But looking at the other side you can include your duty of care, for example, if the parents insists on allowing the child to have a dummy throughout the day, this then comes to you on providing the information that is for and against the use of dummies from a developmental/professional point of view. Also it could include the making sure everyone is aware of the roles each provides and that its consistent both at home and at setting.
How do you achieve this? Do you hold regular meetings - informal or formal? Records on the child with views from the parents/carers (daily journals, learning profiles?) Keep up a close yet professional relationship with the families so if there is a concern/problem it can easily be overcome?
Again i haven't done this unit so let me know if this is on the right track
