Ideas for developing an understanding with letters and sounds

Can you all help me, I am doin unit 420 and I am reasearching and developing an area of practice.
I have decided to do understanding letters and sounds, I have already typed up the typical development of children aged 1-5 years as a base.
However I think it would be nice to have some idea's on activities and play that would also help in this area.
So please any ideas would be great cheers xxxx

Just ideas please, good ways to encourage understanding with letters and sounds!! 2.5-4 years old

Have you tried some of the phase one activities in letters and sounds publication, these are good for pre-school age
