In my pre-school setting, each member of staff has a job. Supervisor takes phone, register, visitors book, someone else has portable first aid kit, accident book, change of clothes (kiddies that is), someone else checks hall, someone else checks toilets. While checks going on children line up and hold onto ropes ready to go out. We leave the building open and have an assembly point which is described in our policies (as is evacuation procedure - so that may be a good place to look for info). We check that all children, staff and visitors are there by calling out names. When we return on our drills, we count the children back in!
I think these procedures apply are in the event of a fire but it is an interesting point as to whether we should be considering other emergencies. Presumbly evacuation would be similar.
