New guidance for schools and early-years settings from the National Institute for Hea

NICE has issued new guidance on promoting physical activity, active play and sport for all children and young people up to the age of 18. Physical activity contributes to both physical and mental well-being and is essential for good health. It can help to prevent coronary heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.Current national guidelines recommend that children and young people should do a minimum of 60 minutes of at least moderate-intensity physical activity each day. However, a recent survey suggests that only 45% of girls and 68% of boys aged 15 reach the recommended levels of activity.The recommendations made in this guidance are for all who have a role in promoting physical activity to children and young people. In addition, NICE have updated their signposting document, ‘Schools and evidence-based action - NICE recommends’ which highlights the key recommendations.
