Default Unit 306

Hi there
I have nearly finished this unit but have been given questions to asnwer, wondered if anyone would be able to help? my memory seems to have gone blank and dont know how to start writing everything down!

How would you adapt the environment for a child with poor eyesight?

What is the legal requirements for provision of an environment for children?

Why is it important to respect different cultures and how can you encourage children to be positive about their own cultures?

Thanks again
Leigh x

Hi

For visual impairement you could adapt firstly by evaluating all the setting's resources/furniture, their positioning, areas of designated activity to protect against risk of injury - trips, falls..
You could find out about the child's impairement and work with recommendations - ask about light, dark, colour, spacial concepts, awareness of distance, likes, dislikes, preferences.
- Visual impairement from Leighton Buzzard's Childminding association
Introduce new & make existing tactile resources more prominent.
Research resources with a view to obtaining.
Look at training, information and professional guidance to improve knowledge and understanding.

For environmental requirements you'll be best placed to look through the welfare standards

If you use the search page there are threads for valuing children's culture that may help more.

A warm welcome to the site.

Hth xx

HIYA, The best way to show respect for different cultures is to make sure we are well informed about what these cultures are. Talk to the families concerned, invite local cultural groups into the setting if you can. Display articles from different cultures. Have role play articles and books if you can from different cultures. If children see this they will feel more comfortable and relaxed about sharing their cultures with us. Its vital we do this because it leads to high self esteem from the children involved and makes them feel that they are valued and respected as individuals. That its ok to be different.
